Measurement samples

Granite
Granite is often used for gravestones and building materials (paving stones, monuments, kitchen countertops, and others).
This type of rock contains various radioactive elements, including the thorium series, the uranium series, and potassium-40.
Salt
(for People with High Blood Pressure)
Generally, “salt” refers to sodium chloride; however, a type of salt that contains potassium chloride is available in the market. This salt can be used by people suffering from high blood pressure. This “salt,” when used as a measurement sample, is found to contain sodium chloride and potassium chloride at a ratio of 50:50.
Ship-Bottom Paint
To prevent barnacles, shellfish, seaweed, etc. from adhering to the bottom of a ship, additives are sometimes mixed with the ship-bottom paints. These additives contain radioactive materials from the thorium and uranium series.
Potash Fertilizer
Fertilizers are essential for plant growth. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are the three main elements in fertilizers. Particularly, potassium helps in root growth. Radiation comes from potassium-40 nuclei, which are naturally found in potassium.
Hot-Spring Mineral Deposits
The left is an image of a sample derived from hot-spring mineral deposits (solidified hot spring components) from Tamagawa Onsen in Akita Prefecture, one of Japan’s radon hot springs. These hot-spring deposits contain radioactive materials, including those in the thorium series and uranium series.
