Application of Ionizing Radiation

Applications in Science and Technology

Toilet paperToilet paper

Manufacturing Management
The thickness and amount of an object can be determined by measuring the change in the intensity of radiation that passes through it.
This method is used in factories to produce papers and wrapping films with a uniform thickness.

PyramidPyramid

Investigation of the Pyramid’s InteriorM
Radiation is used to investigate what is in cavities inside the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. This pyramid is the largest built structure in ancient Egypt. Investigations revealed the existence of two cavities. However, it is still unknown what is inside these cavities.

Baggage inspection at airportsBaggage inspection at airports

Baggage Inspection
Ionizing radiation is used for the nondestructive inspection of fuel levels in rockets, truck cargoes, and airport baggage.

Making Durable Products
Rubber and plastic are called polymers. When exposed to ionizing radiation, the molecules of these polymers react with each other, forming networks like a mesh, making them heat-resistant and ensuring structural rigidity/stability.
This method is exploited to make high-performance car tires and heat-resistant electric wires. In addition, this method is employed in the manufacture of highly resilient tennis strings, swimming pool kickboards, bath mats for home use, packaging materials, and durable, flame-resistant building materials.

DiamondDiamond

Changing Gemstone Color
When exposed to ionizing radiation, diamonds change color from blue to green. Additionally, when heated, they can further change their color to yellow, orange, brown, pink, etc.
This method is also used to change the color of topaz, morganite, and other gemstones.
