Application of Ionizing Radiation

Applications in Healthcare

X-ray RadiographyX-ray Radiography

Inside the Body
X-rays, a type of radiation, are absorbed more strongly by the bones and blood than by other parts of our bodies.
Using X-ray photography and a CT scan, we can capture pictures of X-rays that have passed through the body and determine the condition of fractures and bleeding from outside the body.

CT scanCT scan

Disease Detection
CT scan is a method in which a human body is exposed to X-rays from various angles and a computer is used to create the cross-sectional images of the patient’s head and body to examine the state of illness or injury.
This technique is utilized for detailed examinations of the brain, heart, bones, and other body parts.

Sterilization/Disinfection

Sterilization/Disinfection
Ionizing radiation can be used to destroy or reduce cells and bacteria.
This method can be used to disinfect medical equipment, including cotton swabs, gauze, and syringes while still being wrapped in a bag.

Cancer Treatment

Cancer Treatment
Cancer treatment employs radiation to damage the DNA in cancer cells and destroy such cells.
Ionizing radiation can more likely affect highly active cells, such as cancer cells. Thus, it can eliminate cancer cells without affecting normal cells very much.
